SG Mioni Royal San // Thermal water and mud

Doc thermal mud

Land and water come together in a 100% natural cure.

Thermal muds are an ancient and effective remedy to prevent and solve physical problems of various degrees. They are the basis of specific remedies and special treatments, both aesthetic and curative. Starting off the maturation, preservation and regeneration processes of thermal mud is thermal water, unparalleled for its thermo-mineral properties and for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving abilities. The mud remains immersed in the thermal water for about two months. Thanks to the sunlight and the chemical components of which the thermal water is rich, it develops algae that synthesise the anti-inflammatory substances and make it unique from a therapeutic point of view.

The thermal mud, particularly the salsobromoiodic mud of Abano and Montegrotto, is a mixture of water and clay with antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, pain-relieving, rebalancing and remineralising properties, effective against various skin and joint diseases.

To be truly effective, these particular treatments based on doc mud – therapeutic massages, applications, and mud wraps in one session or administered in cycles of therapies – must be provided by specialised professionals in facilities specially equipped for spa treatments, such as the Hotel Mioni Royal San with its own Mud-Balneotherapy centre.

Salus Per Aquam (SPA)

Thermal water has been well known since protohistory. It has flowed into the Euganean thermal basin for over three thousand years and is still considered a source of health and well-being. “The Water that flows from the Fire [which] without harming gives back the lost vigour and subsides for the suffering, who return to health, from the disease”, so Claudian defined the power of these beneficial waters in the fourth century A.C.  In the Roman era it was called Salus Per Aquam which gives the acronym SPA in common use today.

Thermal water source of health

The thermal water of the Euganean Baths originates from the rain that falls on the Lessini mountains, in the Vicenza Prealps, at about 2,000 meters above sea level. After being absorbed by the ground, it flows for 80 kilometres at a depth of 3,000 metres, reaching temperatures of up to 200° C at some points of its path. In the ascent to the source, it cools and is enriched with mineral salts such as bromine, silica, potassium, sodium, magnesium, and iodine, which contribute to producing the microflora that characterises the mud with beneficial properties. Finally, it flows at about 87° C in the thermal springs of the Euganean thermal basin, such as that of Poggio di Montirone in Abano Terme.

Unique in its kind, the thermal water of the Thermae of Abano and Montegrotto is the basis of a wide range of aesthetic treatments. It is a curative treatment for respiratory tract and musculoskeletal diseases. It is used for thermal balneotherapy, a therapy affiliated with the National Health Service, and for inhalation therapies. For these therapies, the water is cooled through special equipment called heat exchangers, which lower the temperature so it can be used at an ideal temperature: in thermal pools, between 30° C and 35° C, for balneotherapy treatments, between 36° C and 38° C.
